The Sarasota Republican Club hosted the monthly dinner meeting featuring guest speaker Rep. Vern Buchanan on Thursday evening at Marina Jack's Restaurant.

To start the meeting Commissioner Eileen Normile and Commissioner Stan Zimmerman made a pitch for support to club members for the upcoming city commission run off election May 12.

The featured speaker for the event Rep. Vern Buchanan took the floor to give an update to constituents on any progress and issues in Washington D.C.

“You’ve got a super majority in the House that is sometimes still dysfunctional but I feel pretty good about it,” Buchanan said. “We’ve got 54 seats in the Senate which makes a big difference because we’re going to be getting things done in the next couple of weeks.”

Buchanan serves on the Committee on Ways and Means that has jurisdiction on tax policies. He addressed the priorities of the committee.

“We had a retreat with Paul Ryan, myself and a few others and our goal is to try to get as much done this year ideally. Our goal is we want to simplify the tax code that is 75,000 pages,” Buchanan said.

Following his update the floor was open to questions from Sarasota Republican Club members for Buchanan.
