EAST COUNTY — When was the last time you had your glucose levels checked?

Lisa Kirkland, a spokeswoman for Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, bets your last screening  wasn’t as recent it should have been. But it’s a number you need to know to stay healthy.

To educate the public about the importance of physical and mental health and annual checkups, Kirkland and other hospital staff are working with the Lakewood Ranch Community Activities Corp. to deliver free health screenings and interactive demonstrations for the East County community.

The annual Health & Wellness Expo, scheduled for April 25, will focus on disease prevention, with a range of tours and discussions on new technology, such as the medical center’s 3-D mammography machines, created to find illnesses and diseases at early stages.

Chiropractors, massage therapists, and various local doctors will line the inside of the East County hospital’s lobby with screening machines, handouts, balloons and other take-home items.

The event will offer vision, spinal structure, BMI, glucose, posture, blood pressure and strength and lifting technique screenings.

A blood mobile will also be on site and will offer prizes for individuals who donate.

Kirkland expects more than 1,000 attendees will join in the festivities.

“The expo is a wonderful opportunity for residents to learn about their health and the resources offered right here in their community,” Kirkland said.
