Haunted happenings prepare for those who dare

This month’s weekends are especially spooky with haunted happenings around the community. If you are looking for frightful fun then step inside one of these creaky-floored haunted houses or take a spine-chilling ghost walk … if you dare.

Frightmares

When: Open Friday through Sunday through Nov. 1. Times vary by date.

Where: Sarasota County Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd.

Admission: $16 for both haunted houses; parking is free

Come see what terrors await at the Sarasota County Fairgrounds as Frightmares delves into your worst nightmares. Frightmares returns this year with two haunted attractions spanning a total of more than 12,000 square feet.

Ghost Hunting Tours at Historic Spanish Point

When: Runs from 7 to 11 p.m. with tours at 7, 8 and 9 p.m. Oct. 24

Where: Historic Spanish Point, 337 N. Tamiami Trail, Osprey

Admission: Members: $5 for children and $10 for adults; non-members: $15 for children; $20 for adults

Historic Spanish Point hosts Ghost Hunting Tours, a walking tour featuring “un-living” encounters with history and spooky surprises. Investigate the ghostly activities of Historic Spanish Point’s 30-acre outdoor museum. The tour is appropriate for children ages 8 and older. Availability for the tours is limited to 25 spaces.

Haunted Trails

When: 8 to 10 p.m. Oct. 24 and Oct. 25

Where: Oscar Scherer State Park, 1843 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey

Admission: $5; Free for children 4 and younger.

The 2nd annual Haunted Trails returns to Oscar Scherer State Park with a spooky decorated trail for those brave enough to walk it. Guests will have two trails to choose from; one takes a tour through the haunted woods and the other is a family-friendly trick-or-treat trail with activities for younger guests. Other activities include a costume contest for participants.

Fright Night on St. Armands Circle

When: Runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 31

Where: St. Armands Circle

Admission: Free

Prepare for haunted storefronts, frightening characters around every corner and statues dressed in the Halloween spirit. Shops and restaurants around the Circle will be participating and giving out candy for trick-or-treaters. The Sarasota High School drama department will perform a routine to the song “Thriller” at 8 p.m.

Victorian Funeral

When: Runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 31

Where: Historic Spanish Point Mary’s Chapel, 337 N. Tamiami Trail, Osprey

Admission: Members: $4 for children; $8 for adults; non-members: $10 for children; $15 for adults

A mourning widow invites spectators and fellow mourners to grieve with her as she says her final goodbyes to her deceased husband. The Victorian themed-funeral will have a family-appropriate program at 7 p.m. and one for the general public at 9 p.m.
