The snowbirds are gone, and the humidity is taking over. But, although the island may be experiencing a lull in weekly events, the Longboat Key, Lido Key, St. Armands Key Chamber of Commerce has managed to stay busy. This month, the organization will host both the Longboat Key Challenge and the Longboat Key Invitational.

For the event’s second year, the 2012 Longboat Key Challenge has moved to a more spacious location. Last year, it was held at the town dock near Mar Vista Dockside restaurant, and this year the main race will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Bayfront Park. Races include sprint races on kayaks and paddleboards. And from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 19 will be a family-fun day and expo featuring vendors and educational events. Families can participate in free events from learning how to row to safety and rescue lessons.

On Friday, May 25, the chamber will stay on par at the Longboat Key Invitational. This annual golf tournament is in its 24th year. Golf-skill contests will take place.
