Longboat Key Police Chief Albert “Al” Hogle died this afternoon of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in North Carolina. He was 63.

Town Manager David Bullock notified town employees of Hogle’s death in an email at 4:44 p.m. today.

“It is with deepest regret that I inform you of the passing of Longboat Key Police Chief Albert Hogle. Chief Hogle passed away this afternoon from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in North Carolina.
As information is received and services are arranged the information will be shared publically.”

Hogle served as Longboat Key police chief since December 2002.

He was born in Gulfport, Miss., but spent most of his life in Sarasota, graduating in 1966 from Sarasota High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force for two years before he was hired in 1970 by the Sarasota Police Department, where he rose from the rank of detective to captain before he retired at age 50 in 1998 and began a three-year stint on the Sarasota City Commission. He served as the city’s mayor during his last year in office.

Hogle resigned his Sarasota seat in October 2001 to become police chief in Bradenton.
