Obituary: John Spanos

John Spanos, 83, of Erie, Pa., and formerly of Longboat Key, died June 2.

Born Oct. 31, 1927, he was a U.S. Navy veteran and graduated from Bentley College, in Boston. He was a certified public accountant with Ernst & Young and retired from the partnership in September 1998.

Mr. Spanos was a member of the Longboat Key Club and Resort and was an avid golfer — he played at courses throughout the United States and Europe. He was an active member of St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church, in Sarasota.

Mr. Spanos was a sports fan and followed the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Browns. At age 70, he actively participated in a Red Sox baseball fantasy camp in Fort Myers.

Mr. Spanos was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Ann. He is survived by his daughters Diana Spanos, of Marblehead, Mass., and Christine Connolly, of Honey Creek, Iowa; sons Gregory Spanos, of Marblehead, and Stephen Spanos, of North Andover, Mass.; sisters Helen Sanborn and Dorothy Spanos, of Manchester, N.H.; brother, George Spanos, of Reisterstown, Md.; and eight grandchildren.

A funeral service was held June 7, at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, in Erie. Memorial contributions can be made to the Spanos Family Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Erie Community Foundation, 459 W. Sixth St., Erie, Pa., 16507.
