July 11
BMW omelet
9:59 a.m. — 500 block of Canal Road. Criminal Mischief. A man reported his BMW, which was parked at a resort, had been hit several times with eggs. The dried yolks ate away the car’s clear coat, causing at least $200 in damage. Two miles away, another car was egged, suffering chipped paint. Technically speaking, these were two new locations of The Broken Egg.

Pool cleaner
12:38 p.m. — 5300 block of Ocean Boulevard. Petit Theft. Complainant said while she was in her hotel swimming pool, someone stole her wallet and cell phone. She was able to cancel her credit cards before the thief used them.

Footprints in the sand
6:27 p.m. — 200 block of Beach Road. Burglary and Criminal Mischief. The victim reported her condo was burglarized while she was away on vacation. She locked her doors before leaving for two weeks. When she returned, she found the locks broken and the doorframe split, as if the door had been kicked open. The culprit was unable to open the door, however, and did not get inside. Interestingly, the woman’s housekeeper noticed a sandy footprint on the same door a day earlier. She had washed off the sand and thought nothing else of it.

July 12
False alarm?
12:04 p.m. — 5800 block of Midnight Pass Road. Burglary. A family visiting from out of state was staying at a rental condo. The family members all made a run to the drug store for no more than 15 minutes. When they returned, they noticed a strange car was pulling out of their carport, as they were about to enter it. Believing they had just been burglarized, the man dropped off his wife and two kids and began chasing the suspects in his vehicle. He followed the car, with two men inside, to a neighboring condo. The man boxed in the suspects, but they jumped the curb and got away. It did appear that someone had broken into the condo, but as it turned out, nothing had been stolen.

July 14
Follow the leader
1:15 a.m. — Higel Avenue and Siesta Drive. Reckless Driving. A cab driver reported a white Cadillac speeding, swerving and moving aggressively. The cabbie was following the offender while talking to police on the phone. The reckless driver then pulled onto U.S. 41 and started driving even faster.

Off the wall
1:44 a.m. — Higel Avenue and Siesta Drive. Traffic Accident. A woman and man in a car were heading north on Higel Avenue. They were approaching the hard right turn onto Siesta Drive when they encountered a slow-moving car in their path. The woman said that car was going 5 mph. She said they completed the turn then accelerated to pass the slow car. As soon as her car entered the other lane, she said her car sped up for some reason; she lost control and smashed into a wall. Neither person in the car was hurt. A police officer said the woman smelled of alcohol, but because no witnesses could place her behind the wheel, she could not be investigated for DUI.
