Voters head to polls for Election Day

Polling stations will be open until 7 p.m., tonight as voters head out to elect their newest representatives and to vote on several amendments, including Amendment 4, aka Hometown Democracy, and a change to Florida’s Class Size Amendment.

In the U.S. Senate race, leading candidates are Marco Rubio, Republican; Kendrick Meek, Democrat; and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, independent.

For the U.S. House District 13 seat, former Bradenton City Council member James T. Golden is facing off against incumbent Vern Buchanan, who is running for his third term.

In the State House District 67 race, Republican Greg Steube and Democrat Z.J. Hafeez are vying to fill a slot being vacated by term-limited Rep. Ron Reagan.

For the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners race, Democrat Sundae Knight is challenging incumbent Carol Whitmore, Republican, for an at-large seat.

Cascades resident Robin DiSabatino, a Republican, is facing Democrat Roger Galle to fill a seat being vacated by longtime Commissioner Ron Getman.

And for the Manatee County School Board, East County resident and longtime school volunteer Julie Aranibar is challenging incumbent Jane Pfeilsticker, a college professor and scientist.
