Our View: To snowbirds: Don't worry

OK, October on Longboat Key was pretty much of a month-long 'Fright Night.' And not everything unfolded the way you might have scripted it.

Our View: Rowing park questions

Nathan Benderson Park just keeps growing, in scope and in cost. As an international rowing destination, it could be a huge sports tourism draw to Sarasota and Manatee counties.

My View Postal decisions were good politics

The U.S. Postal Service decision to keep open the Tallevast distribution office is good news for those 300 employees. But it does not alter the underlying need for cuts.

Our View: City fumbles police pension

Politicians are not always noted for making the tough decisions. Still, it was more than a little disappointing to see the Sarasota City Commission stay in character even as it changed characters last fall and punt a necessary change in police pensions to some future commission.

Our View: Hogle went by the book

We always say: It's amazing what bizarre things happen in this little island town where life is so perfect. Here it was, Longboat Key residents were just calming down after the surprising (albeit pretty much expected) ousting of longtime Town Manager Bruce St. Denis and the even-more surprising hiring of his replacement, when whoosh ... another Category 5er blows through Town Hall.

Our View: No-kill policy laudable, risky

In a perfect world, we would not have to kill unwanted dogs and cats. In case it is not painfully clear every day, this is not a perfect world.

My View: Anthropological higher-ed changes

The need for reform in higher education is real, and the real issue for debate - not the relative value of anthropologists in society.
