Not a way to treat a lady

1:17 p.m., SPD Headquarters

Harassment: Two women who live in a home on North Lockwood Ridge Road reported that a male resident and guests in an adjacent apartment building have been harassing them. Woman No. 1 said she moved into the house in July 2025, and on her first day there noted men standing on an apartment balcony across a narrow alleyway, whistling at and catcalling her.

Over the next few months, the male resident of the apartment often had male guests who would gather on the balcony, drink and continue to whistle at her, using binoculars to view her over the privacy screen.

The situation escalated over the next few months to comments of a sexual nature being made toward her as the hapless Casanovas continued to fail in their ill-fated attempts to woo the fair maiden.

Woman No. 2 said she has seen a male subject attempt to crawl through the landscaping and onto the driveway during the night, but fled once he was his presence was noted. She also advised that on this date she awoke to find a dead rat placed on the porch and the mechanical gate to the property pried open. Leaving a dead rat on a porch is generally regarded as a threat, intimidation tactic or harassment.

Both woman said they have become fearful that the behavior is escalating. They completed written statements and the case was forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Division.

An act of self-protection

7:04 p.m., John Ringling Boulevard at Benjamin Franklin Drive

Dispute: While responding to a call about a male and female involved in a verbal dispute, an officer was advised by dispatch they could hear the woman yelling at the man, who made the call to 911, in the background.

On arrival, both subjects were standing next to the man’s car. The man advised the couple “were having a great day at the beach,” according to the incident report, right up until the time she told him she had been in contact with his ex-girlfriend. He added the ex has an order of protection against him. He became aggravated, he said, when his current girlfriend admitted to talking to his ex and questioned him about the protection order.

And one protection order, was enough, he reasoned, which is when he decided to leave. However, he said the woman proceeded to closely follow him to his car and did not allow him to separate himself from her. Staying out of handcuffs likely providing the motivation, he said he attempted to remain separated from her until police arrived and to avoid escalation.

Interviewed separately by another officer, the woman provided a similar account of the incident. She said she was willing to secure transportation from a third party so they could separate for the evening. The man said he contacted his father to pick him up as he had been drinking at the beach.

No further action was taken.

Flying fists

11:41 p.m., 1500 block of Main Street

Disturbance: No Cops Corner can be complete without the requisite disturbance, swinging fists and an eventual arrest and trespassing order being issued late at night on Main Street. In this particular incident, officers were flagged down in reference to a disorderly male inside a popular drinking establishment, which ultimately led to an arrest of a man who initially was involved in a verbal altercation with another patron approximately 20 minutes prior.

Security personnel had de-escalated that situation, and the man was warned if his behavior continued he would be removed from the premises. That warning falling short of achieving the desired effect, security was escorting him toward the door when an uninvolved third party became involved, pushing the subject from behind. That’s when the subject turned and began wildly throwing punches at anyone within reach, including three bouncers.

Video footage confirmed the sequence of events and showed the subject initiated the confrontations. He was arrested, transported to Sarasota County Jail and charged with disorderly intoxication. And for good measure, he was issued a trespassing warning, barring him from legally entering the bar for a period of one year.
