As Friars Club President Chuck Eldridge reminisced with John Westerberg, the group's annual end-of-season dinner used to require only five tables of eight.Ā

Now, the fun-filled evening brings together 180 Longboaters to reflect on the past year.

The Friars Club is a men's social group that brings together golfers across the island for randomly matched weekly games, where they tee off, rib one another about their swing and meet friends new and old.

Members uncovered their best sparkles and feathers for the Great Gatsby-themed evening March 24 at the Harbourside Ballroom. They looked through photos, discussed the progress the club made, and gave out awards.

The second annual Frank Sulzman Golf Genius Award went to Dave Gallagher. Last year, Bill Calpin and Tom Murphy both earned the title.

Eldridge thanked Gallagher for stepping up to help manage match schedules this year.

The Bill Flinter Award recognizes a "distinguished Friar whose unwavering dedication and meaningful contributions have significantly enriched and extended the cherished traditions of the Friars." It also prioritizes members who have made a lasting impact and will be remembered for years to come.

"This recipient of this award is a consummate gentleman and someone we all know and respect," Eldridge said. "What everyone may not see is what happens behind the scenes. I have witnessed firsthand the countless hours it takes to ensure every member has an exceptional golf experience. His depth of knowledge, particularly when it comes to technology, is truly unmatched."

What is even more impressive is his willingness to patiently help others, Eldridge said.

He presented the award to Bill Caplin.

Members also introduced a plaque to be displayed at The Tavern and Whiskey Bar at The Longboat Key Club, celebrating member Mark Stratton. He has been a member since 2018.

They also thanked Director of Golf Terry O’Hara.

Jeff Lenobel then took a moment to thank Eldridge, Gallagher, Murphy and Calpin for the countless hours they invested into managing the golf games this year.

"These four men have embraced the responsibility with steadiness, good judgment and an unwavering commitment to the Friars," he said. "Week after week, they ensure this group functions smoothly, even when the rest of us unintentionally make their work much more complicated."

He added, "We thank you for your organization, your patience and your perseverance."
