Disturbance: Police were called by an event director for an art show after she and a security guard got into a disagreement over a parking space. When police arrived, the event director told police that the security guard on duty had moved barricades to park near vendor tents, leading to a verbal argument. The security guard in question had already left the scene, but the police officer spoke to his coworker at the gate box, advising him to tell his coworker to park at a business next door to avoid any issues in the future. Police then closed the case.

Property damage: A visitor was driving in a rental Jeep on Gulf of Mexico Drive when he heard a loud crashing sound. After pulling over to inspect what happened, he found a golf ball lodged in his sunroof and called police to document the damage. When police arrived, the man told police he was unable to identify the golfer. Police filed the report, gave the man a case number and closed the case.

Noise disturbance: A man called police to complain about a hotel performing construction work on a Sunday, something the town’s noise ordinance forbids. Police met the complainant at the grocery store across the street where the man told the officer there had been construction noise going on all day. Police asked if he had reached out to the hotel about the noise and he said no. The officer then went to the hotel to speak to hotel staff himself and was shown an email from the town stating the hotel was permitted to perform construction that day and was exempt from the noise ordinance. The police tried to call the complainant to inform him, but there was no answer. Police closed the case.

Impaired driver: Police pulled over a man who was driving his vehicle on the wrong side of the road Monday night. According to a police report, the officer who pulled over the man smelled the scent of “an unknown alcoholic beverage” emitting from the vehicle. When backup arrived, the second officer approached the man who provided his drivers license and, after a bit of searching, the rental vehicle’s registration. Police inspected the vehicle, noting damage to the passenger side mirror. The driver was asked to exit the vehicle and agreed to perform a sobriety test, which he did not pass. Police then arrested the man for driving under the influence and transported him to the Holmes Beach Police Station to conduct a breath alcohol test. The breathalyzer gave a reading of 0.19, which is more than double the legal limit. The DUI suspect was then transported to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office jail and Longboat police returned to the Key.
1:14 p.m., Schooner Lane
Suspicious incident: Police responded to a residential street for a possible attempted burglary by a woman who thought someone was trying to gain access to her home. The woman said she saw on her Ring camera a man approach her door and appear to “briefly manipulate items near the front entry area,” according to the police report. When police reviewed the footage, all the officer saw was a man approaching the door with a business card in hand. The man then placed the business card at the front door before leaving. The card advertised power washing. Police called the number on the card and spoke to the wife of the power washer, informing her that soliciting was not allowed on Longboat Key. Police then closed the case.
12:00 p.m., Harbourside Drive
Noise disturbance: Construction noise at a gated community led to a concerned resident calling police on a Wednesday morning this past week. When police arrived on scene, construction workers told the officer about residents approaching them concerned about the noise. Police called the complainant back to see what the issue was as the work was being done during the week and during the day, following town code. The complainant told officers that the homeowners association does not allow construction during busy season. Police informed the caller that the police department does not enforce HOA rules, and closed the case.
