Door buster

2 p.m., SPD headquarters

Criminal mischief: One male and one female complainant arrived at police headquarters to report damage to a church bus used to transport the homeless, which occurred following a physical altercation between the male, who was the driver, and a male passenger.

The driver said he turned onto Nancy Street off South Tuttle Avenue to report the altercation with the man who — deciding it was an opportune time to disembark — pushed through the doors that were closed at the time. The female complainant stated the church was now unable to use the bus because of the severely damaged door, which was repaired two years prior at a cost of $800.

The damage was photographed and preserved as evidence, and a criminal mischief charge against the perpetrator was forwarded to State Attorney’s Office for review.

Cut off by the liquor store

4:19 p.m., 1000 block of North Tamiami Trail

Disturbance: While traveling to a Publix location in response to a call regarding a disturbance, an officer was provided by dispatch a description of a male subject who was involved in an altercation with a security guard, and that he was last seen heading northbound on Central Avenue. The officer observed the subject matching the description near 11th Street. While being temporarily detained, the man refused to identify himself or provide any statement. The officer took a photograph of the subject to retain as possible evidence.

Meanwhile, another officer spoke with the manager on duty who requested no charges be filed, but the subject be given a trespassing warning. The officer who located the fleeing subject spoke with the security guard involved, who confirmed the photo of the man as the perpetrator. He stated the man appeared to be intoxicated and became verbally aggressive with the liquor store clerk after being refused the opportunity to purloin additional spirits.

The guard said the subject began harassing people outside of the store until he was ordered to leave the premises. Distributing the photograph with fellow officers, the subject was later identified and was added to the trespass file and, thus, is banned from the premises for one year or is subject to arrest.

Beach chairs not included

4:30 p.m., 1000 block of Benjamin Franklin Boulevard

Disturbance: Four guests of a resort on Lido Beach refused to pay for the use of rental beach chairs for at least the half-day they were occupied, and also refused to vacate the chairs. The rental company called for law enforcement assistance to settle the matter.

A hotel employee explained to officers the chair rental company serves its beach area via an agreement with the inn and guests are made aware that the chair and hotel operations are separate.

According to the incident report, upon contact with the guests they were “in disbelief” that officers were present, but they quickly complied and left the chairs. Whether they paid for the afternoon’s use of the loungers was not included in the incident report.
