Review ransom

3:37 p.m., St. Judes Drive

Harassing phone call: The manager of a Longboat residence operating as an AirBnB called police after receiving phone calls from a previous renter of the property. The property manager told police that former renters called threatening to leave a bad review on the property unless they received a $1,500 payment. Police told the property manager that since no threats of violence were made, the calls were not a criminal offense, but could be a potential civil case. The officer advised the property manager to go through AirBnB’s dispute resolution process and closed the case.

Paddleboard in peril

4:40 p.m., 100 block Gulf of Mexico Drive

Property damage: A paddleboarder called police after he discovered his board had been damaged after it was left in a common area at a condominium complex. According to the peeved paddleboarder, he left his 7-foot “Sup USA” on a rack next to the dumpster where many paddleboards are kept. The paddleboarder said the homeowners association had been no help, leaving him nowhere to turn besides the police. The responding officer inspected the board and saw “several large dimples,” which appeared to be from heavy items such as bricks being placed on the board, according to the police report. The paddleboarder noted to police that contractors are commonly seen in the area of the paddleboards. The officer said the incident did not seem to be a crime, and the paddleboarder said he was content with a report for a potential insurance claim. The case was closed.

Leaving the negativity in 2025

4:07 p.m., Hibiscus Way

Disturbance: A tree trimmer started his new year off by walking away from a job after an argument began. According to a police report, the tree trimmer got into an argument with a woman after showing up to trim a coconut palm tree. He told police the argument began immediately when he arrived when the woman said he showed up late to the job. The tree trimmer responded that no start time had been agreed upon and that he had trouble finding help with the job since it was a holiday. After a heated argument between the two ensued, the tree trimmer told the woman the job was not worth the trouble, and he moved on to the next job down the street. As the tree trimmer began his second job of the year, the woman’s husband confronted him and another argument ensued. The husband told police that he confronted the tree trimmer because he spoke rudely to his wife and that he walked away from the argument and called 911 before the situation got worse. The tree trimmer said he had finished his work and was headed off the island. The officer determined that no crime had occurred and closed the case, but made sure to advise the tree trimmer that there is no tree trimming allowed on Longboat Key on holidays for future reference.
