In a release to town officials, Fire Administration Manager and Public Information Officer Tina Adams said crews were starting to leave the scene and switch to clean-up mode, which would allow Gulf of Mexico Drive to open around 3 p.m.

Both lanes of Gulf of Mexico Drive are shut down as of 2 p.m. on Wednesday due to an active gas leak near the 3400 block of GMD, the town announced via social media.

A 4-inch gas line break caused the closure, according to Adams.

Crews from the Sarasota County Hazmat Team and Longboat Key Fire Rescue are on the scene to address the leak.

Adams said both the northbound and southbound lanes would remain closed until further notice. Longboat Key crew members were on scene to assist with traffic.
