The Tornadoes winded their way to the FHSAA Class 4A state semifinals last season. They graduated two double-figure scorers from that squad, but they didn't lose Yvette Brown. She's back at guard for Booker girls basketball after leading the group with 13.6 points per game as a junior. As of Dec. 11, the senior's averages of 12.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.5 steals are all team-best marks. Brown is the Sarasota Athlete of the Week.

When and why did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball when I first fell in love with it, watching it over TV. I watched the (Golden State) Warriors, 2016, going against LeBron (James) in the playoffs. Jumped in with it at Lee Middle School, and just fell in love with the game.

What's driven you to stick with the sport after all these years?

How competitive the game is. The teammates — it helps you grow friendships on and off the court. It's just a different type of environment and somewhere I like to see myself.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and why was it memorable?

Our senior night last year. It was a very emotional night. Janiel Williams, Brianna Behn and Jsiyah Taylor (were special teammates).

What are your goals for your senior season with Booker?

My 1,000 (career) points, helping my team overcome things we've been trying to achieve for the past couple years and finally making a statement for our program.

It's been a strong start for the Tornadoes, 4-2 as of Dec. 11, what's the reason for that success?

This team is a different mindset. They're very understanding. We're a little young, but we're listening and we trust each other. Again, we're family.

When you're not playing basketball, how do you spend your free time?

Watching basketball.

What's one quote or piece of advice that you've always carried with you?

"Don't settle for less. Always want more."

If you could meet any professional athlete, who would it be and why?

(Stephen) Curry.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now for a dream vacation, where would you go?

Bora Bora.

What is your favorite meal?

Seafood. Snow crabs, especially.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?

My favorite movie right now, because it's been recent, I'll go with Avatar or Harry Potter.

Finish this sentence. Yvette Brown is...

Passionate.
