High school football roundup: Week two

After a strong opening week, only a few area teams walked out of week two with a win.

Sarasota

Cardinal Mooney High (2-0) won 41-6 over Lakewood Ranch High (0-2) at home. Senior quarterback Michael Valentino twice found junior receiver/defensive back Chris McCorkle for a touchdown, the longest being 25 yards. Valentino also ran for a touchdown in the third quarter. Senior linebacker Jacob Brown had a scoop-and-score touchdown in the first quarter. The Cougars will next host Evangelical Christian (2-0) at 7 p.m. Sept. 8. 

Booker High (1-1) won 43-13 over Southeast High (0-2) on the road. Senior running back Ahmad Hunter ran for two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Jordan Johnson threw two touchdowns, one to senior Josiah Booker and one to sophomore Tyren Wortham. Wortham also caught a touchdown from junior Alex Diaz. The Tornadoes will next play Sarasota High (0-2) at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 on the road. 

Riverview High (1-1) lost 53-31 to Buchholz High (2-0) at home. Senior running back DJ Johnson had an 80-yard touchdown run. Senior quarterback Braxton Thomas threw a touchdown to senior receiver Anthony Campbell and ran for a score. Sophomore running back Isaiah Belt also ran for a touchdown. The Rams will next host Palmetto High (1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8. 

Sarasota High (0-2) lost 27-14 to Manatee High (2-0) on the road. The Sailors scored on their first possession via a pass from senior quarterback Johnny Squitieri to senior tight end Nathan Wells. The Sailors will next play Booker High (1-1) at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 at home. 


East County

Lakewood Ranch High (0-2) lost 41-6 to Cardinal Mooney High (2-0) on the road. The Mustangs scored their lone touchdown on a pass from senior quarterback Sebastian Mejia to junior receiver Jaron Fields. The Mustangs will next play rival Braden River High (1-0) at 7 p.m Sept. 8 on the road. 

The Out-of-Door Academy (1-1) lost 16-7 against Oasis High (2-0) on the road. The Thunder scored its lone touchdown via a scoop-and-score from senior linebacker Jack Taraska. The Thunder will next host rival Saint Stephen's Episcopal (1-1) at 7 p.m. Sept. 8. 

Braden River High (1-0) had its week two road game against Palmetto High postponed because of damage done by Hurricane Idalia to Palmetto's new turf field. No makeup date has been announced as of Sept. 1. Braden River will next host rival Lakewood Ranch High (0-2) at 7 p.m. Sept. 8. 

Parrish Community High (1-0) has not yet played its week two game; the Bulls will host Lemon Bay High (1-0) at 7 p.m. Sept. 2.
