High school football roundup: Week one

East County and Sarasota teams found plenty of success to start the 2023 season.

East County

The Out-of-Door Academy (1-0) won 42-0 against Berean Christian (0-1) at home. Sophomore running back Allen Clark had two touchdowns and senior linebacker Charlie Tack had a pick six. Junior quarterback Jackson Roth threw a touchdown to senior Jack Meyers and also ran for a score. The Thunder will next play Oasis High (1-0) Sept. 1 on the road. 

Braden River High (1-0) won 34-20 over Gainesville High (0-1) at home. Junior Yahshua Edwards had a rushing touchdown as did junior Marcus Galloway. Junior quarterback Lucas Despot threw two touchdowns, one a 60-yard touchdown on a screen pass to Galloway, another a three-yard pass to freshman Nazir Pitchford. Senior defensive back Isaac Heaven, who is in his first year of varsity football after starring for the school's basketball team, had an interception. The Pirates had a 34-7 lead with 4:30 remaining before Gainsville scored two late touchdowns to make the score closer. Braden River will next play Palmetto High (1-0) Sept. 1 on the road. 

Lakewood Ranch High (0-1) lost 20-13 to Lemon Bay High (1-0) on the road. The Mustangs fell behind 20-0 in the first half before attempting a comeback that came up short. Senior quarterback Sebastian Mejia threw two touchdowns, one to senior Jaron Fields and one to senior Jayden Munoz. The Mustangs will next play Cardinal Mooney High (1-0) on the road Sept. 1. 

Parrish Community High (1-0) won 43-0 over North Port High (0-1) at home. Senior quarterback Jackson Volz, who lives in Lakewood Ranch, threw four touchdowns, three to sophomore Kymistrii Young. The Bulls will next play Lemon Bay High (1-0) at home Sept. 1. 


Sarasota

Riverview High (1-0) won 54-0 over Southeast High (0-1). Senior quarterback Braxton Thomas threw three touchdowns, senior quarterback Jeremiah Dawson threw one touchdown and sophomore quarterback Anthony Miller threw one touchdown. Miller also caught two touchdowns and had more than 100 receiving yards; senior Anthony Campbell caught the other two touchdowns. Running backs DJ Johnson and Isaiah Bell had one rushing touchdown each. The Rams will next play Buchholz High (0-0; first game was suspended for weather) Sept. 1 on the road.  

Booker High (0-1) lost 47-41 to Immokalee High (1-0) at home in overtime. The Tornadoes were up 41-28 with 4:47 remaining in the third quarter before the Indians fought to tie the game. Junior wide receiver Rashawn Peterson had a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown and sophomore Jason Thomas had an interception. The Tornadoes will next play Southeast High (0-1) on the road Sept. 1. 

Sarasota High (0-1) lost 28-14 to Fort Meade High (1-0). Senior quarterback Michael Bendever threw a touchdown pass to senior Chris Rudolph in the loss. The Sailors will next play Manatee High (1-0) Sept. 1 on the road.

Cardinal Mooney High (1-0) won 54-0 over Avon Park High (0-1). The Cougars will play Lakewood Ranch High (0-1) Sept. 1 at home.
