When Mary Elizabeth Carey asked how many of the more than 100 St. Mary, Star of the Sea parishioners knew the late Father Edward Pick, nearly every hand went up.

"He had a best friend in so many of you," Carey said. "There's not much I need to do to bring him into this room."

On Dec. 8, the 48th anniversary of the church that Pick founded, Carey did her best to summarize the life and impact of the man who was known to be gruff at times, always kind and always have a dog with him. She read from a speech he gave more than 10 years ago on the 50th anniversary of his ordainment.

Pick died in March 2020 at the age of 86 and the parish had not had the chance to celebrate his life yet, so they took the opportunity on the church's anniversary to come together and share a meal and their best memories.
