Classic Movies at the Opera House presents ‘The Wizard of Oz’

Transport yourself to the magical land of Oz with Sarasota Opera House’s screening of the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.” Join Dorothy, a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion on their expedition to confront the Wicked Witch of the West and visit the Wizard of Oz. At 6 p.m., Sarasota Opera’s Da Capo Society will host a “Wizard of Oz” costume contest with prizes awarded to those who get the most creative prior to the film. Film starts at 7:30 p.m.

Got end-of-season blues with the close of Sarasota Orchestra’s concerts for the season? Check out its summer program, Sarasota Music Festival, at this performance between soloists and ensemble. Enjoy music by the great Baroque masters J.S. Bach and Vivaldi, and witness Sarasota Music Festival Director Jeffrey Kahane conduct from the harpsichord for Bach’s sprightly “Keyboard Concerto.” The concert will conclude with faculty member Ani Kavafian’s recital of the famous “Summer” from Vivaldi’s iconic “The Four Seasons.”

Nik's Pick: ‘Real Life’ Hip Hopera Touring Show

This unique touring production was written and directed by — and, for this run, will star — occasional WBTT artist Joel P. E. King. His two-act “hip-hopera” utilizes captivating song and dance to tell a story with the tone of “Rent” and “In the Heights” mixed together. It’s a transformational exploration of place that explores the attitudes of urban living told through main character Ray, who is forced to choose his morality over a sensationalized street nature that could end his life.

Tchaikovsky’s opera based on the novel by Pushkin tells a tale of love lost in 1800s Russia. Young Tatyana is overcome by a sudden passion for her handsome new neighbor Eugene Onegin. She writes him a love letter, but he isn’t interested. Several years later upon his return, Onegin finds that Tatyana has married an aged prince, and tries to win her back. “Eugene Onegin,” is considered one of Tchaikovsky’s finest works, and is sung in Russian and told in three acts.

Kelly’s comedy is inspired from his own life experiences and is known to be honest, abrasively funny, and yet refreshingly vulnerable.
