Gear up for summer camps

Summer is right around the corner, and when school lets out, students and their parents will be searching for things to do. Look no further than summer camps at the Longboat Key Club, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium and Sarasota Youth Sailing and SURFit.

RESORT AT LONGBOAT KEY CLUB

Summer camps at the Longboat Key Club are only offered to resort guests and members, but summer memberships are available.

Camp Loggerhead

Camp Loggerhead will offer three weeklong sessions, each with a different theme.

At “Into the Wild, “campers will create animal-themed clothing and arts and crafts and go on field trips to the Jungle Gardens and the Big Cat Habitat or Myakka State Park.

The “Culinary” camp will take campers on field trips to Mixon Fruit Farms and Dakin Dairy Farm and also teach them to cook and bake. Campers will create their own chef hats.

At the final session, “Mermaid and Pirate,” campers will go on a treasure hunt on the beach and on field trips to Mote Marine Aquarium and Smugglers Cove.

On the last day of each session, there will be a water fun day, and lunch and healthy snacks will be provided each day.

Ages: 5 to 12

When: 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 13-17 for “Into the Wild”; July 11-15 for “Culinary”; Aug. 1-5 for “Mermaid and Pirate.”

Cost: $250 per week for members; $275 per week for guests; $60 for a one-day camp.

Junior Tennis Camp

The 10th annual camp is designed for all levels and will focus on tennis fundamentals, modern technique, psychology, score keeping, game playing, strategy, footwork and conditioning. Children will also learn the importance of teamwork, good sportsmanship, fair play, work ethic and positive attitude.

Each day will end with singles and doubles competitions. Snacks will be provided, and full-day campers will receive lunch.

Ages: 8 to 17; Pee Wee camp for ages 4 and 5.

When: Weeklong sessions run from June 6-Aug. 12. Full-day sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; half-day sessions runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:15 to 3 p.m.; Pee Wee runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

Cost: Full-day sessions are $330 for members and $360 for guests; half-day sessions are $180 for members and $200 for guests; Pee Wee camp is $180 for members and $200 for guests.

Unless otherwise noted, each weeklong camp session costs $239 for members and $259 for nonmembers.

AquaKids
Choose between two themes, “Muncher, Crunchers, Slurpers & Chirpers,” where children explore the food web of the ocean, or “Ocean Odysseys,” where children learn about ocean ecosystems from the deepest depths to the shallowest reefs. Swimming skills are required.
Ages: Students entering grades one to four
When: Sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 6-Aug. 12.

Sea Sleuths

At “Generation H20,” campers will learn about the oceans before today and past explorers and also how to keep the ocean safe.
“Marine MVPs” will explore the roles marine animals play in different ecosystems. Both sessions will include snorkeling, kayaking and boat excursions.

Swimming skills are required
Ages: Students entering grades five to eight
When: Sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 6-Aug. 12.

Art-‘SEA’

Using a variety of mediums, campers while channel their inner artist and learn about marine life. No experience is necessary

Ages: Students entering grades three to five

When: 1 to 5 p.m. June 27 to July 1; July 5 to 8; July 25 to 29; and Aug. 1 to 5

AquaTech/SeaTech

Campers will use science, technology, engineering (STEM) skills to learn how Mote’s scientists study the ocean. Activities include simulated shark tagging and tracking, GPS digital mapping, stop-motion animation and constructing ocean robots.

Ages: Students entering grades three to five for AquaTech; sixth to eighth grades for SeaTech

When: AquaTech runs from 1 to 5 p.m. June 13-17; June 20-24; July 11-15; July 18-22; and Aug. 8-12; SeaTech is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 27-July 1; July 5-8; July 25-29; and Aug 1-5.

Exploring Marine Science Careers

For students aspiring marine biologists, the camp will explore marine science careers. Meet Mote scientists, biologists and animal trainers, perform hands-on field research in Sarasota Bay, meet aquarium animals and participate in training sessions.

Ages: Students entering sixth to eighth grades

When: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 13-17; June 20-24; July 11-15; July 18-22; and Aug. 8-12.

Discovering the Florida Keys

Campers will snorkel, kayak, explore tide pools, visit Marathon’s Turtle Hospital and take an all-day boat excursion to Dry Tortugas National Park in this overnight camp in the Florida Keys.

Mote will provide round-trip transportation from Sarasota, and children must be able to swim.

Ages: Students entering grades seven and eight

When: June 20-24; July 18-22; and July 1-5

Cost: Mote members $1,105; nonmembers $1,155

Ecology of the Florida Keys

Explore the marine life of the Florida Keys while scuba diving and snorkeling, exploring tide pools, fishing, kayaking and visiting the Dolphin Research Center.

Mote will provide roundtrip transportation from Sarasota, and children must be able to swim.

Ages: Students entering grades nine to 12

When: June 13 to 17; June 27 to July 1; and July 11 to 15

Cost: Mote members $1,105; nonmembers $1,155

Mommy and Me

At “Hide and SEAk,” young campers and an adult will learn about colors and camouflage in the sea, and “The Coast Counts” will teach children and adults about the coasts through stories, games, science tools and crafts.

Each session includes visits to Mote Marine Aquarium, Marine Mammal & Sea Turtle Center and hands-on exploration of the Sarasota Bay.

Ages: 2 to 5 with an adult

When: Each session is from 10 a.m. to Noon Tuesday to Thursday. “Hide and SEAk” runs June 13-July 8; “The Coast Counts” runs July 11-Aug. 5.

Cost: $135 for members; $145 for nonmembers

SARASOTA YOUTH SAILING

U.S. Sailing Reach — STEM and Sailing
Located at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, students at the longest-running water sports camp in Sarasota will study science, technology, engineering and math and utilize their knowledge while sailing and exploring the Sarasota Bay.
Ages: 5 and up
When: Sessions run from June 6-Aug. 12. One-week sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; two-week sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

SURFIT CAMP

The camp will teach children the techniques of stand-up paddleboarding, surfing and swimming and will also include ocean safety and marine biology lessons. Camps are at Turtle Beach on Siesta Key, Lido Beach and Nokomis Beach.

When: One-week sessions run from 9 to 12:30 p.m. for half-day; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for full-day June 6-Aug. 12
