Southeastern Guide Dogs hosted the launch party for the Superheroes on Parade campaign Monday evening, at the Sarasota Studio Dimmitt Automotive Group showroom.
Sponsors and board members were present to meet some of the artists who will have hand painted 50 sculptures in total once the project is completed.
The campaign will bring awareness to the important role guide dogs have in bringing independence to the lives of Southeastern Guide Dog program graduates. Soon the streets of Sarasota will be decorated with the sculptures resembling a guide dog wearing a cape.
Each of the identical sculptures weighs 80 pounds and stands 42 inches tall but that's where the similarities end. Artists have been encouraged to be creative with their designed using their sponsors as the inspiration.
An official website including a map of where to find each statue will be launched May 2. Members of the public are invited to vote for their favorite sculpture and to share photos on Instagram using #SuperheroesOnTheStreet. The contest runs until Sept. 18 with winners to be announced at the Sept. 24 Gala.
