East County students shine at conference

Lakewood Ranch High and Braden River Middle students are stars.

They're not celebrities who appear on the big screen, but they won a range of awards at Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) events in July at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of American (FCCLA) National Conference in Washington, D.C.

Ten Lakewood Ranch students brought home medals, and 10 Braden River Middle students took home gold, silver or bronze awards.

Competition categories included interpersonal communication, career investigation and life event planning.

FCCLA teaches students about traffic safety, teen violence prevention and other coming-of-age issues.
