Tokyo Olympic delegation visits park

A delegation from the Tokyo Olympic Committee visited Nathan Benderson Park April 16 and April 17, to learn about the facility’s configuration and features.

The International Rowing Federation, FISA, recommended organizers of the 2020 Olympic use the park as a model for its future multiuse aquatic center.

County administrator outlines priorities

Health care funding, Manatee County Animal Services and public transit are priorities in next year’s county spending plan.

County Administrator Ed Hunzeker proposed the topics to county commissioners last week during the first in a series of public budget workshops that will “shape the county’s spending plan for next year,” a news release said.

Other workshops and meetings include a fund summary review June 3; capital improvement program, June 11; and budget public hearing, June 11.

Budget numbers have not been released because property values for the next fiscal year haven’t yet been determined, Hunzeker said.

School District plans for 2015-2016

Parents and students didn't want an earlier start date going into the 2015-16 school year, according to responses Manatee County School District officials fielded this week.

The Manatee County School Board tentatively approved a calendar for the upcoming school year that reflected an Aug. 10 start date and May 25 end date.

But the district announced April 17 that it is considering another calendar draft, which shows students returning Aug. 24 and completing the year June 9.

The school board will approve a calendar at its next meeting April 28.

To view the calendar, click the “hot topics” link on the district’s home page, manateeschools.net

The district continues to seek feedback from the community via [email protected].
