Manatee takes back prescription drugs

Newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows deaths from prescription painkillers nearly quadrupled between 1999 and 2001.

Local agencies battling the prescription-drug abuse epidemic encourage resident to dispose of unused prescription medications, particularly in honor of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Sept. 27. The day provides a safe, convenient and responsible way for individuals to dispose of prescription drugs, while educating the public about potential of abuse of medication.

In Manatee County, eight locations are open daily yearround to accept unused prescription drugs. No liquids or needles are accepted.

The following locations are open 24 hours daily:

• Manatee County Sheriff's Office, 600 U.S. 301 W., Suite 202;

• City of Bradenton Police Department, 100 10th St. W., Bradenton; and

• Palmetto Police Department, 1115 10th St. W., Palmetto.

The following locations are open weekdays, generally from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (times vary):

• Manatee County Sheriff's Office locations at 407 57th Ave. E., Bradenton, and 5030 U.S. 301 N., Ellenton;

• Bradenton Beach Police Department, 403 Highland Ave., Bradenton Beach;

• Holmes Beach Police Department, 5801 Marina Dr., Holmes Beach; and

• Longboat Key Police Department, 5460 Gulf of Mexico Dr., Longboat Key.
