The Sarasota Bay Mooring Field, located near Marina Jack, has doubled in size following the completion of the second phase of work along the bayfront.
An additional 35 moorings, anchored to steel beams at the bottom of the bay, are now available for boats up to 100 feet in length. In addition, a “Slow Speed — Minimum Wake” zone is in place surrounding the mooring field, marked by newly installed signs, according to a city release.
Following some delays, the city completed the first 35 moorings in 2012. The mooring field is designed to prevent boats on the bayfront from breaking free during storms and damaging other property.
The cost of the second phase of the project was $218,000, funded by a grant from the West Coast Navigation District. A third and final phase, expected to begin in late 2014, will add 39 additional moorings in the field.
