Low Fidelity Opening Reception — takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ringling College's Selby Gallery. Take a look at New York City's raw punk and new-wave scene in the ’70s and ’80s through the lens of photographer Bobby Grossman in this exhibit's opening reception.
Fabulous Independent Film Festival Opening Night — takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Burns Court Cinema. This fourth-annual LGBTQ film fest opens this Friday with a screening of "Blackbird." The festivities continue through the weekend with opening and closing cocktail parties and a variety of feature-length and short films. $10. Opening-night cocktail party at MADE at 9 p.m. and dance party afterward at Throb at 11 p.m.
Physical Plant, Doris Dei and Hail Dale — takes place at Growler's Pub at 9 p.m. Catch psych-rockers and vocal harmonizers extraordinaire, Physical Plant at singer Jake Elrod's farewell performance before moving. Also on the bill are fellow New College band Doris Dei and last-minute addition, Hail Dale. Free.

Saturday, Aug. 23

Sarasota SUP Series — takes place at 9 a.m. at Nathan Benderson Park. The second race in this year's series will include 10k, 5k and half-mile grom races as well as a longboard and penny skateboard slalom course competition. $75.
Vocal Vixens — takes place at 8 p.m. at Venice Theatre. In this cabaret performance, the Vocal Vixens, Lyn Purmort, Kathryn Parks and Hannah Jae celebrate songs made popular by the most sensational singers of all time. With musical direction by Bob Constantino, the three singers will explore a variety of genres and familiar tunes in a fresh light. Second performance at 2 p.m. Sunday. $15.
Neon Vibe 5k — takes place at 8:30 p.m. at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch. Get your fitness on after dark at this family-friendly glow-themed 5k run/walk. $45. Admission includes T-shirt, bib and glow powder.
