East County resident Brittany Wenger has won international honors for her breast cancer detection project.

The Out-of-Door Academy student on July 23 won the grand prize at the Google Science Fair, as well as first place in the 17-18 year old division.

Wenger’s entry, called Global Neural Network Cloud Service for Breast Cancer, allows doctors to determine whether a breast cancer tumor is malignant or benign by using attributes from fine-needle aspirates, a type of biopsy. The program, Wenger said, has a 99.1% rate of diagnosing malignancy correctly.
