A student at the Out-of-Door Academy is working to fight teen homelessness in the area.

Junior Gabriella Alvarez on Jan. 23 launched her Teens for Jeans campaign and is collecting used or new jeans to donate to homeless teenagers. The drive runs through Feb. 3 and jeans must be in good repair, with no holes or rips.

"Two years ago, I wanted to take on a service project for the school, so I signed up onDoSomething.org's mailing list," Gabriella said. "They sent an email about the Teens for Jeans project, and I signed up to do it with Out-of-Door. I just loved the idea of our community getting together to help the homeless. Last year we received 144 pairs of jeans and we hope to get more this year."

Jeans can be dropped off at ODA, 5950 Deer Drive, Sarasota.
