Former Mayor George Spoll left public office behind last year when he reached the end of his term limit on the Longboat Key Town Commission but he hasn’t left the public eye. He currently chairs the Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force and serves as vice president of the Bay Isles Association, president of the board of directors of the Federation of Longboat Key Condominium Association.

Spoll, 78, grew up in Mount Vernon, N.Y., and went on to become a builder of homes, condominiums and commercial rehabilitation projects.

He and his wife, Madelyn, moved to Longboat Key in January 1993. Around that time, Spoll attended a Fairway Bay condo meeting during which a painting project was discussed. Spoll asked about other things in the community that needed to be repaired before the buildings could be painted, and by September 1993, he was on the condominium’s board. He went on to serve as president for 12 years.

In 2003, Spoll was appointed to the Planning & Zoning Board, which he served on four a year-and-a-half before becoming a commissioner.
