Obituary: Allen Barkey

Allen Barkey, of Longboat Key, died Sept. 24.

Born in Istanbul, at 17 Mr. Barkey emigrated to the U.S. He settled in New York City with his parents, Isaac and Caroline, and sister, Viviane. He graduated from Lycee Saint Michel and Manhattan College. A U.S. Army veteran, he and his wife, Henrietta, ran Barkey Importing Company, which introduced the U.S. to Turkish apricots.

Mr. Barkey was fluent in five languages and loved to travel. He was also an opera buff, an avid history reader and a lifelong student. He loved swimming in the ocean and riding his three-wheel recumbent bike.
Mr. Barkey is survived by his wife of 48 years, Henrietta; his sister, Viviane; sons Jonathan and David; and two granddaughters.

A memorial service was held Sept. 27, in Larchmont, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be send to the Epilepsy Foundation.
