+ Willie Shaw should heed editorial advice
Dear Editor:

“This is time for change, and it’s a positive change, and it’s one that includes all of District 1, not just part of District 1.” — Willie Shaw, Sarasota City Commissioner

As one who has an emotional and financial investment in District 1, I can only hope and pray that Willie Shaw has read and taken to heart your candid and thoughtful editorial, “Newtown needs fresh leaders,” (May 5).

Your poignant call for “strong, moral, self-reliant, color-blind leadership” has long been held by many in our community but rarely expressed openly in public for obvious reasons. You are to be commended for your candor.

Shaw has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the daily lives of his constituents, and should he “seize the day,” he can be assured of support from all sectors of the community. The words of Martin Luther King Jr. seem appropriate at this important juncture in the life of our city: “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”
