Lakewood Ranch-based ShelterBox USA today offered East County residents a chance to see a ShelterBox  in action.

In partnership with LWR Communities, ShelterBox organizers set up a ShelterBox kit outside the Lakewood Ranch Information Center on University Parkway. The event was part of the organization's annual Big Green Box Week, which runs June 11-18, and is meant to educate the public about the importance of taking humanitarian action after national disasters occur.

Internationally, ShelterBox responds immediately to floods, earthquakes and other disasters to provide disaster victims with a ShelterBox kit, which includes a tent for a family of up to 10 people, a stove, blankets, a water filtration system and other essentials.

“We deliver aid all around the world, but many people in our own community are not familiar with ShelterBox," said Emily Sperling, ShelterBox USA president. " We’re pleased to partner with Lakewood Ranch, which will help raise awareness about our work.”

ShelterBox USA is ShelterBox's American affiliate.
