Harold Schneider is a popular man. For his 99th Birthday on Nov. 11, 2011, his friends and family celebrated at Sarasota Sailing Squadron with barbeque and live music. In his 99 years, he has worked with various agencies of the U.S. government, survived a plane crash and lived all over the world: Genoa, Italy; Stockholm, Sweden; Paris, France; American Embassy, Moscow; Iceland, and Cairo, Egypt.

The fourth and fifth graders at Out - of - Door Academy played a variety of holiday songs Tuesday, Dec. 19 at the school cafeteria for parents and teachers. Over 100 students played instruments and sang songs like Carol of the Bells and Jingle Bells. The students have been practicing playing their instruments since September. 'It gives all of the kids a goal and they get excited about practicing and sharing their music,' said Orchestra Director Dr. Linda Vasilaki. 'This is the first night many of the students are playing music together, it's a spring board to the next level.' A few seniors from Out - of - Door Academy High School came to conduct and play with the younger children.

Members of the Sarasota arts community gathered Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Southgate Community Center to honor the life and art of Jay B. Starker, a noted artist and musician, who operated a shop in Sarasota since 1960. In addition to creating jewelry, paintings and poetry, Starker hosted a group of musicians, known as the Gathering of Exiles, who performed international music at his shop. The tribute displayed many photos of Starker, who died this July, as well as works of his art and recordings of his music, and members of the Gathering of Exiles performed music in his honor.
