Members of the community gathered Monday, Jan. 21 at Booker High School to march two miles to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park in remembrance of the civil rights activist. Members of the Greater Hurst Chapel AME Church sang songs such as "Let Nobody Turn Me Around," while Sarasota Vice Mayor Willie Charles greeted neighbors. Alford Sanders marched with his children and checked out vendors at the park celebration. "I like the march and the camaraderie of everyone getting together," Sanders said, "and bringing my kids so they can enjoy it."

Iwo Jima Marines are now few, but still proud

Longboat Key resident and Iwo Jima survivor Martin Samowitz was there when the U.S. Marine Corps raised the flag that became an iconic image of WW II. The 65th anniversary of Iwo Jima was Feb. 19, and the anniversary of the flag raising over Mount Suribachi was four days later, on Feb. 23.

The American Advertising Association - Suncoast presented the 2012 ADDY Awards Thursday, Feb. 21 at Marie Selby Gardens. Ringling student Louie Zuniga designed the Through the Looking Glass themed gala Through the ADDY Glass where people mingled. More than 100 ADDY's were presented to Suncoast area businesses and agencies. 'The ADDY's is a three tier national competition, so this is the best work of the Suncoast,' said President of the 2012 to 2013 AAF Suncoast.
