The Sarasota Women's Republican Club met for their monthly lunch Thursday, Jan. 4 at Michael's on East to listen to Senator Nancy Detert speak. Seventy ladies attended the lunch where they heard about women in politics. 'It's educational and you get a chance to see everyone and mingle,' said Corresponding Secretary Carlene Mallires. The club brings in different speakers every month from politicians to people in the community.

Thousands of people walked the streets of downtown for the 25th Annual Sarasota Festival of the Arts Saturday, Feb 16 and Sunday, Feb 17 to buy unique work and check out the craftsmanship. Old time friends from New Jersey Judy Eisner, Irene Britman and Marilyn Wiener wandered through the festival enjoying the artistic talent. 'It's just beautiful,' said Britman. Locals and tourists alike walked the crowded streets marveling at sculptures, paintings, jewelry and more.

The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce held it's second annual Bulls, Blues and BBQ Wednesday, March 20, at the University of South Florida Sarasota - Manatee campus to allow businesses to network in a two county market. More than 300 people listened to Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones jam out and enjoyed food from Chic-Fil-A, Square One, Hickory Hollow Barbeque, Anna Maria Oyster Bar, and Smack Daddy BBQ.

Friends of Sarasota Ballet met August 11 in Studio 1 at FSU Center for the Performing Arts. It's the same studio where the friends, or the support and fan wing of Sarasota Ballet, usually witnesses rehearsals of the professional company; but instead, they got to sit in on a Carreño-Barbieri Festival for Pre-Professionals class taught by Jose Manuel Carreño himself. The students stem from as far as Hong Kong and the Royal Ballet School for the three-week program.
