OUR VIEW: Keep the Promise for Israel

To understand why the Observer Group newspapers have always been strong supporters of Israel - and find deep fault with President Obama's Middle East speech last week - we have to go as far back into the written record of history as possible.

OUR VIEW: Higher priorities for deputies

Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube is doing what all other levels of government are doing - except the irresponsible feds - and that is cutting spending and reprioritizing.

MY VIEW: School board violating state law

In response to the April 20, 2011, editorial, "School Board on right path," I voted "no" on this issue for two reasons.

OUR VIEW: Fixing a broken system

Florida's economic development system has long been a bust, plagued by excessive bureaucracy, ponderously slow and inefficient with multiple state departments involved.

MY VIEW: Turn off the TV. Quick!

TV and the rest of Digital Land that we use to watch videos are making us fat, lazy, dumb and horrible citizens.

Our view: Right turns in the Legislature

Gov. Rick Scott, a Tallahassee outsider despised in the media and willing to take unpopular stands on principle, had a surprising amount of success during his first legislative session as governor.

OBSERVED: To incorporate or not? That is the question

In my 11 years with the East County Observer, no single decision has carried as much weight as the one of whether Lakewood Ranch should become its own city.

In memory: Adrian Shawn Littlejohn

In the last two months, we featured Adrian Shawn Littlejohn, the 1-year-old son of Lakewood Ranch coach Anthony Littlejohn who battled bravely a rare cancer, twice on our cover. Sadly, he died at 9:15 a.m., May 1, resting comfortably in his mother's arms.

Our View: Common sense code needed

If we are going to have rules, and we certainly need some, then they have to be enforced. But a generous dose of common sense should be ladled out by the rule enforcers.

Our View: Ranch location makes it 'iDEAL'

The State College of Florida trustees are to keep watch over the best interests of the college. And so it is reasonable for them to be questioning all portions of the Design & Economic Acceleration Lab at Lakewood Ranch.
