The Sarasota Chapter of Ikebana International kicked off another season with a demonstration, titled "Ikebana for Your Backyard," Sept. 12, at Selby Gardens. The group will host a holiday luncheon Dec. 5 at University Park Country Club.

Friends and relatives of Mitch and Stephanie Moore sported their tennis shoes and headed out to King Family Farm Sept. 17 for the 5K Walk and Roll. The event raised money to help Mitch Moore travel to Panama for stem cell therapy. He lost the use of his legs 12 years ago in a traffic accident.

The McNeal Elementary Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, at The Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club, 15150 70th Terrace E. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Fee is $125 per person and includes dinner.

On June 28, Lakewood Ranch residents Jessica and Gerrid Smith boarded a plane for Africa. They returned from Ethiopia with their adopted son, whom they have named Elijah.
