East County youth named national scholarship finalist

Braden River High School's Ashley Gillam is one of two Manatee County high school students who have been named semifinalists in the 49th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program, according to a release from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The Out-of-Door Academy dropped its second-consecutive district game with a 42-21 loss to St. John Neaumann. The Thunder turned the ball over seven times in the loss. ODA quarterback Evan Wilson connected with Austin Hoppe for a touchdown and also ran in for a score. Running back J.T. Fischer scored the Thunder's other touchdown on a 5-yard carry. ODA returns to non-district action Sept. 28 at Evangelical Christian.
