As a literacy coach at Gene Witt Elementary School, Taylor McLaughlin wishes more people knew about the events at the Lakewood Ranch Library.
"There is more available in the community than people realize to help support literacy — even in the summer — to prevent summer slide," McLaughlin said.
McLaughlin and her son, 5-year-old Haydon, attended the Summer Learning Program Kickoff Party May 30 at Lakewood Ranch Library.
It marked the beginning of programs, including one with the theme of Roadtrip USA, that runs until July 31. For the Lakewood Ranch branch, its focus is Honeyville, Colorado, hence the bee-themed decorations and activities.
Each Wednesday from 2-3 p.m., different activities will be held.
Lakewood Ranch's Anissa Mule attended the Kickoff Party with her children, 6-year-old Natalie and 3-year-old Cole. She is a former librarian and said she knows how important libraries all for all ages.
"I greatly appreciate all that the library does for families and the community," Mule said. "The library serves as a vital resource. My family will always be library supporters."
Lakewood Ranch's Meghan Biegel said the summer reading program is a hit for her children, 12-year-old Connor and 7-year-old Reagan.
"My kids enjoy the reading incentives and are motivated to reach their goals in Beanstack (an app to track books)," Biegel said. "It's a fun way to keep them excited about reading throughout the summer, so they can stay on track for school."
Parrish's Jeanna Melendez brought her 4-year-old son, Nathan, who especially enjoyed the bubble station, for the festivities.
"We’re very lucky to have a safe and fun spot we can hang out and flex our brains together," Melendez said. "The librarians obviously put a lot of thought and care into the activities. We’re grateful for the opportunity to do things we probably wouldn’t be able to do otherwise."
Parrish's Nathan Melendez, 4, says his favorite part of the Summer Learning Program Kickoff Party is the bubble station and the foam building blocks.
