A major repaving project is coming to North Tamiami Trail.
By consent agenda, on May 18 the Sarasota City Commission authorized a local agency program agreement between the city and the state of Florida for a resurfacing and safety improvement project on U.S. 41 from Myrtle Street to General Spaatz Boulevard at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.
The Florida Department of Transportation is providing $5.25 million for the project, which includes construction and construction engineering inspection services for approximately 1.24 miles.
Improvements include milling and resurfacing, as well as safety modifications at the University Parkway intersection. Those include widening, pedestrian signage, high-emphasis pavement markings, new pedestrian signals and updated signal timing. No city funds will be used as the project is fully funded by FDOT and the Sarasota-Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization.
Also approved by consent is an authorization for the city to engage in a local agency program agreement with FDOT for the design and extension of Circus Trail along Circus Boulevard into and through Bobby Jones Golf Club and Nature Park.
The agreement was approved to the City Commission on May 4, 2026. The FDOT requires a resolution to formally authorize and document execution of the agreement. Also fully funded by the state, the project also requires no city funding.
Pulled from the consent agenda for discussion and approved unanimously by the City Commission was a purchase and sale agreement of city-owned property at 905 Royal Palm Drive with Community Assisted and Supported Living Inc. (CASL).
There, CASL will build two one-bedroom, one-bathroom and two two-bedroom, one-bathroom units for qualifying occupants earning at or below 50% of area median income (AMI). It will maintain affordability for 20 years with an extended use period of 30 years for households at or below 80% AMI.
Based on the Sarasota County Property Appraiser’s website, the assessed value of the property is $172,600. CASL proposes to acquire the parcel for $220,000. CASL will utilize $1.43 million in federal HOME Investment Partnerships American Rescue Plan funds for acquisition, design and construction of the affordable rental units.
The parcel is off Royal Palm Avenue just north of 47th Street.
