There was no mistaking the guest of honor at The Bazaar on Apricot and Lime on June 13.
It was Helen Roper from the 1970s to 1980s sitcom "Three's Company," and its spinoff "The Ropers." Or to be precise, multiple versions of her.
Members of the community braved the heat for Mrs. Roper's Romp, presented by the venue and by Project Pride SRQ, with 19 women participating in a Mrs. Roper beauty pageant.
The freewheeling landlady played by Audra Lindley has recently reemerged in popularity through Mrs. Roper's Romp events, which grew out of a parade during a 2013 New Orleans Pride event.
"She was the first feminist on TV," said attendee Tammy Hauser. "She was funny, because she didn't let her husband control her at all. She was in charge, she wanted to have a good time. She was more open about all the stuff going on with Jack and Chrissy and Janet ... just that he wasn't gay, and that there were three young people living together, and she was supportive of it, just open about it, spunky and fun."
The event also gave the concept a chance to gain new attention.
"Actually, when I first saw it on Facebook, I thought, 'That seems stupid,'" said Jolanta Bremer. "And here I am after purchasing the outfit on Amazon, and it was really fun. I really don't know what the woman stands for, so I'm going to research that. So, what will come of that is another fan of Mrs. Roper, apparently."
Although she hadn't planned on it, Bremer ended up being crowned the 2026 Queen Helen.
"I got to swap these glasses with my good friend's, and I think it made all the difference," she said.
