It was close at the top after day one of the LECOM Suncoast Classic.

One stroke separated the two lowest scorers. Another stroke back, a six-way tie for third place developed.

Ian Gilligan changed that April 3 at Lakewood National Golf Club — decidedly so.

The 23-year-old American, who turned pro last year, shot eight under par in his second round, moving into first place at 15 under par for the tournament. He carded nine birdies — five from holes 10-15 — to take a four-stroke lead.

Gilligan has four top-10 finishes on the Korn Ferry Tour this season, and is in search of his first professional win. Trailing him is Jay Card III at 11 under par, as well as Peter Kuest and Hunter Eichhorn, who are tied for third at 10 under par.

Play was suspended due to darkness and will resume at 7:45 a.m. April 4 with completion of the second round, followed by the third round.
