'Tis the season for chowing down on sugar cookies, sipping on hot cocoa, singing carols and checking out some of the best-decorated houses in the area.

Those seeking out holiday lights may need to do some hunting to find glittering lights on Longboat, St. Armands and Bird keys. But we pounded Gulf of Mexico Drive, beat the bushes of Broadway Street and strolled Boulevard of the Presidents to find the more eye-catching displays this year.

If you have additional favorite places to admire the lights of the season across the island, let us know.

Several Bird Key homes participated in holiday home decorating, including the one at 125 N. Warbler Lane that featured some of the tallest lights this year.

While evergreens may be the tree of choice for decorating elsewhere in the county, palms are essential to decorating on Bird Key, including out front of 343 Bob White Way. A full moon adds to the glow.
