A peacock took a minute to rest on a Longboat Key resident's porch on Fox Street recently.

Peacocks have long been an animal of note on the barrier island, with some adoring their presence — and others not so much.

Some residents were displeased with others' desire to limit their presence on the island. When the birds were frequenting the island, specifically Longbeach Village, the town’s approach was to remove all female birds but allow 10-12 male birds to maintain their residence.

Raccoons have recently taken the top spot for problem animals as they have made restaurant Euphemia Haye's dumpster their go-to evening gathering spot.
