Let Your Light Shine

The Second Chance Last Opportunity organization — which empowers individuals in crisis to make better choices — hosts a “Share the Light” luncheon every year, and 2019 was no exception. Guests gathered Oct. 17 at Michael's On East to support the group's mission to help at-risk individuals, low-income and homeless families.

CEO and founder April Glasco spoke to the power of being given support and a second chance in life, and thanked her four daughters for being there for her and giving her the courage to surpass her own challenges.

"They're my inspiration," Glasco says. "They gave me hope to know I can fulfill my purpose."

She also thanked volunteer Lauretta Anderson and other volunteers for their hard work bringing the Share the Light luncheon to life.

The luncheon honored WWSB ABC7 News Team reporter Duhane Lindo and Arlene Sweeting, co-founder of WSLR 96.5 Community Radio and Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center. Michael Saunders & Co. Realtor Rachel Benderson received a Community Champion award for community involvement. Glasco says all were chosen for their compassion and desire to help others even if no one notices.

By the event’s end, Second Chance Last Opportunity had raised more than $20,000. Glasco says the money will be directed towards the organization’s after school programs, life skill programs for adults, assisted service programs and resupply needs.

Two Weeks In India

Beyond the obvious attractions — vibrant colors, lively decor and colorful saris — A few guests at Share Care Global’s “An Evening in India” fundraiser walked off with some inspired live auction gifts. Melissa Howard and Anand Pallegar both won a home buffets from Poonam Maini’s Tandoor Fine Indian Cuisine restaurant.

Dawn Patterson also won a 14-day trip with Poonam Maini. They will be headed to Share Care Global’s food shelter in Maini’s home village of Garhdiwala in Punjab, New Delhi, Jaipur, the Taj Mahal and more.

Designing Daughters launched the Donors of Distinction, its annual giving society, Oct. 9 at the Sarasota Yacht Club. The program will bolster the organization’s fundraising events throughout the year.
