It felt like a special presence was watching over the guests at the Girls Inc. Honoree Luncheon on March 1 at The Field Club.
The gathering, which brings together all of the past Girls Inc. honorees and welcomes the new ones into what Co-Chairwoman Kay Mathers called “a special sorority/fraternity” of Girls Inc. supporters, was very close to the heart of late Girls Inc. advocate Nikki Nilon. Nilon died June 2, 2016, but the legacy of a woman who once organized tea parties for the Girls Inc. participants to meet positive female role models in the community lives on.
“Let’s take a moment to remember her charm and her wit and her smile... and her fabulous hairstyles,” Co-Chairwoman Kay Mathers told luncheon guests with a smile.
This year’s honorees are Dr. Karen Hamad and Kim Cornetet, and the Girl of the Year is Alex Perez, recipient of the Girls Inc. Leadership award.
Shayla White, who is the mayor of the fictional Girls Inc. town Dream Harbor, is receiving the “She Knows Where She’s Growing” Award.
Guests enjoyed mingling, food and drink and several speeches.
