Thousands of miles from Rio De Janeiro, an olympics of a different sort took place at Philippi Shores Elementary School Monday afternoon.

Second grade students took part in the Measurement Olympics to test their knowledge of centimeters, feet, milliliters and grams through a series of booths. Students made their way around to eight booths where they competed in events like the high jump, where they measured the difference in centimeters between their highest reach standing and then jumping.

A favorite among the competition olympians was the Paper Plane Fly, where they folded paper airplanes before launching them across the courtyard to measure the distance flown. The event that caused the biggest splash was the water relay.

Two teams with four students each competed to see who could fill one gallon of water quickest. At the far end of the table one student had the task of filling a cup of water into pint, then the next student poured the full pint into a quart, then the quart into the gallon.

For their efforts after completing all of the events, the olympians were treated to ice cream sundaes. Students had to measure out 2 grams of toppings that included chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and white chocolate chips.
