Creekside Drinks: Cocktails for the calorie-counter

The rest of the country might be adding their “bear weight” as cold weather looms, but here in Sarasota. we're basking in the thought of year-round summer.

Soon, the humidity will break, and once again, we'll be able to hit the beach for longer walks — it's always swimsuit season here.

I always keep this in mind when I create new skinny cocktails. With the juicing craze stronger than ever, making drinks that incorporate vegetables can be a healthy, creative twist on the farm-fresh concept.

So go ahead — have your cake and drink it, too with these calorie-conscious recipes:

Pick up the Beet
Pick up the Beet

  • 1 ½ oz. Hendricks gin
  • 2 oz. beet juice
  • 1 oz. 100% pure honey
  • 2 slices jalapeño
  • 2 squeezed lemon wedges

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a martini glass.

Not For Rabbits

  • 1 ½ oz. vodka
  • 2 oz. carrot juice
  • splash of ginger juice
  • splash of lemon juice
  • 1 oz. agave nectar
  • 4 mint leaves (slapped)

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice.
