Alan Silverglat

Age: 68

Family: Wife of 32 years, Cindy; daughter, Kara

Hobbies: Golfing, cycling, reading and gardening

Interesting Fact: When his daughter was growing up, Silverglat, a retired newspaperman, made her read one thing from the newspaper every day before she left for school.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — When Alan Silverglat first saw his name on the ballot, he snapped a picture with his phone and sent it to his daughter in Chicago.

“To me, it’s a pretty big thing to have my name on the same ballot with those running for national and statewide office — doesn’t happen every day, nor to everyone,” Silverglat said. “In our family, we always share things, big and little, within our small family. It’s part of what keeps us close.”

Although he has served as a supervisor for the Lakewood Ranch Community Development District 5 board for the last four years, Silverglat previously ran unopposed.

Over the last four years, Silverglat has put his accounting background to use as the CDD’s treasurer. His career leading the financial helm of Ernst & Young, Knight-Ridder and Pulitzer Inc. lent itself to such service in retirement. Silverglat also wanted to ensure his community within the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club maintained its look and feel over time.

“It’s my belief if you want to see things change, you have to get actively involved,” Silverglat said. “It’s not enough to complain. People have to take responsibility to make things better.”

Silverglat said since joining the board, he’s helped modify financial controls and reporting for the district.

He said he’s also helped keep costs down without compromising quality.

At 68, Silverglat said he has no plans to slow down.

In the coming term, if re-elected, he hopes to continue those efforts, while working to assure the community maintains its aesthetic qualities. He also wants to get district residents more involved.

“I listen and make a best effort to provide a fair hearing to all resident concerns,” he said.

Editor’s Note: Lakewood Ranch CDD 5 Seat 3 candidate Ronald Steger declined an interview request.
